I have firstly seen Cannoli in the Godfather Part I. The driver of the Don Corleone – Paulie Gatto – betrayed to the family and Don was assassinated. Then, Peter Clemenza, Paulie Gatto and Rocco Lampone come together and take the road. Clemenza wants to pull the car over to take a leak. Then, Rocco pulled the triger and killed the Paulie. That was because his betrayal was revealed. Herein, the cold-blooded Clemanza told Rocco that “leave the gun, take the cannoli“. Notice that a mafia solider overemphasized that dessert even he just committed a murder.
Cannoli is a traditional Sicilian dessert. You cannot find the dessert in northern areas because of the conflict of northerners and southerners. On the other hand, you can find the dessert easily in New York because of the number of the Italian immigrants here.
A cone similar to Cornetto ice creams covers the dessert. Vanilla and Italian ricotta cheese added inside. It has a sourish taste.
I firstly tasted Cannoli in my Venice visit. Found a bakery close to the Rialto Bridge and Cannoli appears in the menu luckily. Still remember the taste of the dessert.
Even you cannot find this delicious dessert in Italy everywhere, where to eat cannoli in Istanbul? That’s the question.
Caffe Vergnano, EATALY
This is my favorite place. It is in the mall of Zorlu Center, Zincirlikuyu. EATALY restaurant serves with Caffe Vergnano for Italian desserts. Here, I paid 40 Turkish Liras for a double cannolis and an americano in 2020 September.
Chocca Sweet
This place is in Anatolian side of Istanbul. It serves just Italian and Spanish desserts. An Italian high school graduate entrepreneur manages here. It is in the Muhurdar Karakolu Street, Moda, Kadikoy.
Aida – Vino E Cucina
This is a pretty Italian restaurant. This is in Moda, Kadikoy as well. Besides, it is very close to the Chocca Sweet. You will like the both interior design and music playing here. Its cannoli is not the best but if you like Italian meals, you have to visit here and eat the dessert.
So, those are the places I visited and ate the dessert in Istanbul. It is not definitely overrated dessert. It deserves all praises. If I find new restaurants and cafes serving cannoli, I will add here. Please add comments to this post, if you have any recommendations.
